What support work involves

A tight labour market

The ACT's small size means travel is rarely the obstacle — a worker can cross the territory in half an hour. The constraint is the labour market itself. Canberra has low unemployment and strong competition for casual staff, so providers can find weekday daytime cover more easily than evenings and weekends.

Some ACT providers also draw workers from Queanbeyan and the surrounding NSW region, which effectively enlarges the pool. If you live near the border, mention it — it can improve your options in both directions.

Cost and funding

Support work is paid from your Core Supports budget at national NDIS price limits, with higher rates for evenings, weekends and public holidays. Provider travel is claimable within limits, though short distances keep this modest in the ACT.

NDIA-managed participants generally need registered providers. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can also engage unregistered providers and independent workers.

What to ask an ACT provider

Staffing practice is the thing to probe:

• Will I have a consistent worker, and who covers leave?
• How reliably can you staff evening and weekend shifts?
• Do you draw workers from the NSW side of the border?
• What notice do you need to change a shift?
• Can I meet a worker before committing?
