What coordination does in the ACT

A coordinator interprets your plan, finds providers, negotiates service agreements and follows up when things stall. In the ACT they also spend meaningful time working across territory services — ACT Health, housing and education all interact with NDIS supports here more visibly than in larger states.

The level funded in your plan sets expectations. Support connection is brief. Standard coordination is the usual level. Specialist support coordination applies where risk needs active management.

A small market with cross-border reach

The ACT is geographically tiny, so travel almost never limits who you can work with — a Belconnen-based coordinator can service Tuggeranong without difficulty. The real constraint is supply. A relatively small pool of providers means the strong ones are often at capacity, and a coordinator who knows who is genuinely taking referrals is worth a great deal.

Many ACT coordinators also work across the border into Queanbeyan and the surrounding NSW region. If you live just outside the territory, say so — plenty of providers cover both sides, but registration and travel arrangements differ.

Because the market is small, reputation travels. Ask:

• Which providers are you currently placing people with in Canberra?
• How full is your caseload, and when could we realistically start?
• Have you worked with participants in my situation before?
• Do you work across the NSW border if I need providers from Queanbeyan?
• Are you independent of the providers you would refer me to?

Coordination is funded in the Capacity Building part of your plan. NDIA-managed participants generally need a registered provider; plan-managed and self-managed participants usually have more choice.
