An acquired brain injury (ABI) is any damage to the brain that happens after birth — from a stroke, an accident, an illness, a lack of oxygen or other causes. Two people with an ABI can need completely different support, which is why there is no standard package of ABI support services.

What to check before you enquire
Providers vary in how much brain injury experience they have. Having these points ready makes the first conversation far more useful:
- Experience — how often the provider works with acquired brain injury, and whether their staff have specific training.
- The support you actually need — practical help at home, help getting out, therapy, or a mix.
- Cognitive and communication needs — memory, fatigue, planning, speech or processing, described in your own words.
- Consistency — whether you will see the same workers, which matters a great deal after a brain injury.
- Funding — whether the support is funded through the NDIS, insurance, compensation or privately.
- Location and travel — where support needs to be delivered, and how far a provider is willing to travel.
