Supported Independent Living (SIL) in Canberra
Supported independent living funds the staffing in a person's home — daily support and overnight cover. If you are exploring SIL in Canberra, My Care Link Australia is a free matching service that connects you with providers.
We are not a provider and we do not hold vacancy information, so this page does not list available rooms. It explains how SIL works in the ACT and what to prepare before you enquire.
What SIL funds
SIL covers the support hours delivered in the home, not the home itself. The property might be private rental, ACT social housing, family-owned or Specialist Disability Accommodation for participants assessed as eligible.
Most ACT arrangements are shared homes with two to four residents. Individual SIL exists where the assessed need justifies it.
- Personal care, medication and health routines.
- Overnight support, active or sleepover.
- Household tasks, cooking and shopping.
- Skill development towards independence.
- Coordination with therapists and behaviour support.
A small market where timing decides everything
The ACT has a relatively small number of SIL houses, so vacancies come up infrequently and are often filled through existing provider and coordinator networks before they are ever advertised. Being registered as interested with several providers matters more here than in a large market.
Housing supply is the tighter constraint rather than staffing. Some Canberra families also look across the border to Queanbeyan and the surrounding NSW region, where more properties are available. If that is acceptable to you, say so — it materially expands the options.
How funding is assessed
SIL funding is based on a roster of care setting out the weekly support hours, usually developed with a provider and a support coordinator. The NDIA funds against that roster, so occupational therapy and behaviour support evidence carries real weight.
Start early. Between evidence gathering, funding approval and waiting for a suitable vacancy, most families work on this over several months.
What to ask an ACT provider
Questions that reveal how a house actually functions:
- Who lives there now, and what are their support needs?
- How do vacancies typically come up, and how do I register interest?
- Is overnight support active or sleepover?
- How stable is the staff team in that house?
- Would you consider options just across the NSW border?

Common questions about SIL in Canberra
How do I find SIL vacancies in Canberra?
Tell us the support needed and whether shared or individual living is preferred, and we connect you with providers operating in the ACT so you can register interest directly. The service is free.
Are SIL vacancies hard to come by in the ACT?
They are less frequent than in larger capitals simply because there are fewer houses. Registering interest with several providers, and being open to Queanbeyan and the surrounding region, improves the odds.
Does SIL cover my rent?
No. SIL funds the support staff. Rent and board are paid separately, usually from income such as the Disability Support Pension.
Who prepares the roster of care?
Usually the SIL provider, working with you and your support coordinator, based on occupational therapy and behaviour support evidence. It is then submitted to the NDIA as the basis for funding.
