What support coordination covers

A support coordinator helps you turn plan funding into working supports: understanding your budgets, finding and comparing providers, setting up agreements, and sorting out problems when a service is not delivering. They are not the person providing daily assistance — that sits with support workers, therapists and other providers.

Check which level is in your plan before you enquire. Support connection is brief, get-you-started help. Support coordination is the standard ongoing level. Specialist support coordination is for higher-risk or more complex situations and is usually recommended in your plan for a specific reason.

Coverage across metropolitan Melbourne

Melbourne's spread means coordinators tend to specialise geographically. Someone with deep provider relationships in the inner north may have far fewer contacts in the outer south-east, the west around Werribee and Melton, or the outer east. Because a coordinator's usefulness comes largely from who they know, ask which parts of Melbourne they work in rather than where their office is.

Face-to-face contact costs travel time, which is claimable against your plan. If in-person meetings matter to you, name your suburb early. If you are happy with phone and video, say so — it opens up coordinators across the whole metro area and often shortens the wait.

Questions worth asking before you sign

Coordinators describe themselves in similar language, so the differences usually show up in the practical detail:

• How many participants do they support, and what is their usual response time?

• Do they have experience with your specific needs — psychosocial disability, autism, complex health, SIL and housing?
• Are they independent of service delivery, and if not, how is that conflict managed?
• How will they report hours used so the coordination budget lasts the plan year?
