What support workers do

Support work covers a wide range. At one end it is personal care — showering, dressing, medication prompts, transfers. At the other it is community participation: getting to a class, a job, the gym or a friend's place. Most participants use a mix, and the mix changes over time.

The critical variable is not the task list but the fit between worker and participant. Someone who shares your interests, speaks your language and turns up on time consistently is worth far more than the cheapest hourly rate. Say what matters to you in the enquiry — gender, language, age range, driving, pets, cultural background — because those preferences are what shortlist against.

How Melbourne's support worker market works

Melbourne has the deepest support worker supply in the country after Sydney, but it is not evenly spread. Inner and middle suburbs are well served. The growth corridors — Wyndham, Melton, Casey, Whittlesea — have far more participants per available worker, and shifts of two hours or less in those areas are genuinely hard to fill.

Timing drives availability as much as geography. Weekday mid-morning shifts are easy to staff. Early mornings, evenings, weekends and short split shifts are not, and they cost more under the NDIS price limits. If your hours are flexible, saying so widens your options substantially.

What it costs and how it is funded

Support work is paid from the Core Supports budget in your plan and billed at NDIS price limits, which vary by day and time. Weekday daytime is the base rate; evenings, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays step up. Travel to and from you can also be claimed within limits.

How your plan is managed changes your choices. NDIA-managed participants generally need registered providers. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can also use unregistered providers and independent workers, which usually means a wider field and sometimes lower rates. Confirm which applies to you before shortlisting.

Choosing a provider in Melbourne

Agencies vary enormously in how they run rosters. These questions tell you what you are actually buying:

• What happens when my regular worker is sick or on leave?
• How much notice do you need to change a shift, and what is the cancellation policy?
