Supported Independent Living (SIL) in Hobart

Support funding, not housing

SIL pays for staffing in the home. The house itself is separate — private rental, Housing Tasmania, family-owned or Specialist Disability Accommodation where the participant has been assessed as eligible.

Shared homes with two to four residents are the most common model here, with support shared across the household. Individual arrangements exist where assessed need supports them.

• Personal care, medication and health routines.

A small pool of houses

Southern Tasmania has a limited number of SIL houses and a tight rental market, which together make vacancies infrequent. Providers often fill a room through their own networks, so making your interest known to several providers early is the single most useful thing you can do.

Staffing stability is the other consideration. In a small workforce, the quality of a house depends heavily on whether its support team stays together. Ask about turnover in the specific house rather than the organisation overall.

Funding and evidence

SIL funding is set against a roster of care describing the weekly support hours, prepared with the provider and usually a support coordinator. Occupational therapy and behaviour support evidence underpins it.

Because both funding approval and vacancy timing are unpredictable, families generally start this process well before a move is needed.

What to ask a Hobart provider

Ask about the house, not just the organisation:

• Who lives there now, and what are their routines and support needs?
• How long has the staff team been in place?
• Is overnight support active or a sleepover?
• How are vacancies advertised, and how do I register interest?
• What happens if the household mix does not work out?
