What SIL pays for

SIL funds people, not property. Rent, board, food and bills are paid separately, usually from the Disability Support Pension. If the housing itself is the barrier, that is a separate conversation about SDA or home modifications.

Funding is built from a roster of care — how much support is needed across a typical week, whether staff are needed overnight, and whether overnight support is sleepover or active. Those decisions drive cost far more than the location does.

Where SIL houses are around Bendigo

Proximity to the hospital genuinely matters for people with regular medical appointments — it shapes how much of the roster gets consumed by transport. So does bus access, which is often the difference between a person going out independently and needing a worker for every outing.

If nothing suits in Bendigo itself, Castlemaine, Echuca and Kyneton are within the same provider networks, and an individual SIL arrangement in a rental the family finds is a realistic alternative to waiting for a shared vacancy.

Cost, evidence and approval

Providers quote SIL based on the roster of care and how many people share support. The NDIA reviews that quote before funding it, so expect an evidence stage: occupational therapy and other reports covering support needs, overnight requirements and any behaviour support plan.

The process usually takes months. Starting assessments before a plan review rather than after is the single most effective way to shorten it.

Ask each provider how sleepover versus active overnight support has been costed, and what happens to the roster and your costs if a housemate moves out.

Questions to ask before accepting a placement

Compatibility with housemates and staff continuity decide whether a placement lasts. The house itself matters less than either:

• How were the current housemates matched, and how long have they lived there?
• How many staff work in this house, and what has turnover been over the past year?
• Who covers a shift at short notice, and would that person know the participant?
• How are Bendigo Health appointments and Melbourne specialist trips handled?
• How is family kept informed, and how often?
