What home modifications cover

Home modifications are changes to the building itself so a home is safer and easier to use. They range from small additions such as grab rails through to structural work like widening a doorway or rebuilding a bathroom.

NDIS bathroom modifications

Bathrooms are the single most common request. A hobless or level-entry shower, a slip-resistant floor, a shower seat, grab rails positioned for the way you actually transfer, a relocated basin, or a full accessible bathroom rebuild are all changes people ask about.

Bathroom work almost always starts with an occupational therapist. The OT assesses how you move, transfer and wash, then writes the recommendation that a builder quotes and builds from. Minor changes are simpler; anything structural is treated as a complex home modification and takes longer.

If the job is maintenance rather than a change to the building — a dripping tap, a tidy-up, yard work — that sits under handyman and home maintenance instead.

Before you commit

Ask any provider whether they work from an OT recommendation, whether they are licensed and insured for the trade involved, how long the build will take, and what happens to your bathroom access while work is underway. Whether the modification is funded is a matter for your plan — check with your plan manager, support coordinator or the NDIA.
