What you should get from a coordinator

The measure of a good coordinator is whether your supports are running three months after you start. Getting there means interpreting the plan, finding providers who service your area, negotiating agreements and following up when a service stalls.

Coordination does not include the hands-on support itself. That comes from support workers, therapists, plan managers and accommodation providers. A coordinator's value is the network and the follow-through.

• A written plan of which supports start when, and who is responsible for each.
• Provider options with enough detail to compare them properly.
• Service agreements checked before you sign.
• Regular contact — not just a call the week before your reassessment.
• Clear reporting of the coordination hours used.

How Adelaide's market behaves

Adelaide is compact by capital-city standards, which means travel is less of a barrier than it is in Perth or Brisbane. A coordinator based in the CBD can realistically service the north, the south and the hills. The practical constraint here is depth of provider supply rather than distance — some specialist supports are thin, and a coordinator who knows which providers genuinely take new participants saves months.

Outer areas such as Elizabeth, Salisbury and the southern suburbs still have fewer providers per participant than the inner ring. If you live there, ask a prospective coordinator which providers they have actually placed people with nearby in the last six months.

Choosing between coordinators

Ask these before you sign anything:

• Which providers in my area have you worked with recently?
• What is your caseload, and who covers you when you are on leave?
• Do you have experience with psychosocial disability, autism or complex health needs?
• Are you independent of the providers you would refer me to?
• How often will we speak, and how will you record the hours?

Cost and registration

Coordination is paid from the Capacity Building budget in your plan. NDIA-managed participants generally need a registered provider. Plan-managed and self-managed participants usually have a broader choice, but confirm it before committing.
