Supported Independent Living (SIL) in Sydney

SIL is support, not housing

This is the distinction that causes the most confusion. SIL funds the staffing — the support hours in the home, including overnight. The house itself is separate: it might be private rental, social housing, family-owned or Specialist Disability Accommodation if the participant has been assessed as eligible for it. You can have SIL without SDA and, less commonly, SDA without SIL.

SIL is usually delivered in a shared home of two to four residents, with support shared across them. It can also be delivered one-to-one in an individual home where the assessed need supports it. Which model suits depends on the level of support required and how a person copes with housemates.

• Support with personal care, medication and health routines.
• Overnight support — either active or sleepover, depending on need.
• Help with cooking, cleaning and running the household.
• Building skills towards greater independence.
• Coordinating with therapists and behaviour support practitioners.

Finding SIL across Greater Sydney

Sydney has the largest SIL market in the country, but vacancies are still the bottleneck. Availability is driven by which houses have a room and whether the existing residents are a workable match — a vacancy in Penrith is not useful to a family in Sutherland, and a house whose residents need very different levels of support may not be right even if it is close by.

Housing cost pushes supply outward. Newer SIL and SDA stock concentrates in Western and South Western Sydney, the Central Coast fringe and parts of the south-west growth corridor, rather than the inner and eastern suburbs. If staying near family, a school or a treating team matters, say so explicitly — it will narrow the search but avoid wasted conversations.

How SIL gets funded

SIL funding is based on an assessment of the support hours needed across a week, usually documented in a roster of care that the provider prepares with you and your support coordinator. The NDIA then funds against that roster. It is one of the more involved parts of the scheme, and most families do it with coordinator help.

Expect the provider to want occupational therapy or behaviour support evidence, a clear picture of overnight needs, and information about how the participant interacts with others in a shared setting. Having that material together before you enquire shortens the process considerably.

What to ask a Sydney SIL provider

Beyond the vacancy itself, these questions reveal how a house actually runs:

• Who currently lives in the house, and what are their support needs and routines?
• What is the staffing pattern overnight — active support or sleepover?
• How stable is the staff team in that house, and what is the turnover?
• How do you handle compatibility problems between residents?
• What happens to my support if I need to move house later?
