Separating the support from the housing

SIL is the support. Housing is the property. They are funded separately and often come from different organisations, and conflating them is the most common source of frustration in a SIL search.

Support can be delivered in shared housing with other residents, or one-to-one in a home a person already occupies. The property may be owned by a community housing provider, privately rented, family-owned, or purpose-built Specialist Disability Accommodation for people with very high support needs.

State your position clearly when you enquire: support only, a place in supported shared housing, or both. Providers can answer far more usefully when they know which one you mean.

What SIL support usually covers

The final mix is documented in a roster of care agreed with the provider, and asking to see how that roster is built is the clearest picture of what a provider will actually deliver. Requests usually cover some combination of the following:

• Daily living assistance — meals, household routines, medication prompts.
• Personal care including showering, dressing and toileting.
• Overnight support, sleepover or active-at-night, subject to assessed need.
• Skill development towards greater independence over time.
• Support to participate in the community and maintain relationships.
• Coordination with therapists, GPs and other services involved.

Searching across the Perth metropolitan area

Perth's metropolitan area stretches a long way north and south along the coast and inland through the hills, and supported housing stock is not evenly distributed across it. People searching in the northern corridor, the south-east and the outer hills usually find a different set of options from those searching close to the city.

Distance is a genuine consideration in Perth. If a person relies on family visits, existing therapists or a particular day program, check the travel involved before committing — a location that works on paper can be difficult to sustain weekly. Being open to a neighbouring suburb often improves both choice and timing.
